Damn that's a shame! Are you guys working on anything in the mean time? An asset pool or whatever?

I'm still working on the final release of BG42, which leaves me hardly any time to start working on another engine. There's still a lot to do before release.

Hi,

I am new here and I used to love battlefield 1942 and bg42 was one of my favourite mod. Modern BF suck imo.

Surely looking forward to bg42 final and gonna reinstall bf1942 for it.

Programmer by training, I would like to do something for this new game.

Anybody can point me in the right direction?  Zwinkernd

Thank you and a warm welcome!

Well, our Battlegroup3 project was halted sometime ago because of the lack of active people. It based on the Unreal engine and made some progress until project leader Haribo resigned and stopped any further development.

But the idea is still alive. With the BG42 final release soon, team ressources and capacities can turn to something new. This don t has to be the Unreal project necessarily (though it would be a good base) - we are open for any idea and suggestion.

Just to make sure, I am still lurking around from time to time Smiley
If we get a sufficient number of active developers, I am ready to pick up where we left off, be it Unreal based or something else. Unreal Engine 4 is now out for only 19 USD a month subscription fee. It gives you acccess to the entire source code and has so many improvements over UDK on which the original sequel was based. I am just tired of waiting really.

Hope to see BG42 final soon, maybe people will be more active after that.

Cheers,

Haribo

The main problem is creating the huge amount of new content you have to do from scratch. Keep in mind we have to create complete worlds.
It would be easier if we could convert the existing stuff for a very first release and add/replace content step by step.
In my opinion it would be a huge step forward to have the existing BG42 content on a new modern engine with more realistic terrain and vegetation.

I agree.

Look what the have done at EoD, using the Unity 3D game engine.

Are we legally allowed to simply take DICE stuff to a new engine now that the game is free? It does not mean open source.
THe tanks, planes, static models are our own, its is OK to port those.
I am not sure if we are allowed to port player models and animations though. If we are, then what you are suggesting is possible. If we are not, then no, that is not going to work.
THe basis of any new game is infantry gameplay. If we dont even have a basic playermodel and the matching animations, then what is the point?
Very good point that you bring up EoD, but they have this:

and this:

Which are obviously their own creation, and not DICE stuff. We - unlike them - DO NOT have this luxury.

EoD Redux also mentions having bought a lot of stuff from the Unity webstore and will be a paid product. Heck if i got a thousand dollars i could finish it myself also.

You are right. I currently buying stuff from Turbosquid for BG42, if needed. Its a great source, so I will continue this for BG3 if there is no other possibility. We definetly dont want to go the EoD way (getting commercial), but if we cant get modellers into the team, we had to get the models from extern sources. This is my possibility to support the project.

All our own stuff in BG42 can sure be used in BG3, if it is non commercial. So we mainly need proper player models.

Whats with the player models from BGF? Afaik the German player model was done by Frontlines mod (which has merged with BG), so its our own. I don't know who modelled the Russian player model however, but it was surely no Dice model.

I am going to suggest something radical. Why not team up with FH2? I am 100% sure that they are in the same shoes as us. I know of the ancient rivalry between us, but with no new Battlefield installation ready for modding, the way forward for either one of us is a custom made engine and standalone game. They have the artists, we have the programmers.

Thoughts?

I fully agree. Why not work togather as one team! I won't have any objections.

I'm sure for 2 mod teams to work together to create something standalone is a great idea. It is quite different from say trying to merge 2 existing mods together.

Can anyone give a brief write up about the progress (if any) of BG3 up till this point? It will be pretty helpful for starters like me to get over the initial inertia ^^

For now what I guess what I could do is to check out the UR engine, and maybe logon to one BG42 1.8 BETA game (anyone?).

I am not completly against a colaboration, but keep in mind that that there was naot only rivalry in the past, but also different thinking how things should work, teamwise and gamewise. So I am not sure if this will fit together. On the other hand - from what I know - numbers of devs at FH2 are also descending. Their situation is not as precarious as ours but not much better. Last but not least, we dont know if THEY want to merge at all. Someone should ask them.

@yongxian: Connect to our MOB Server (see top of the site) - there will be running bot battles all the time, sometimes human players team up. Best chance for that is on wednesdays and fridays from 20:00 GMT+1.
